It's ok if you have excuses!
Written By: Mairead, Registered DietitianOf the nutrition clients and members that I sit down with to set goals or make some nutrition changes, so many of them say "but I'm just making excuses" when they're talking about the barriers to improving their health or reaching their fitness goals.
Excuses are when we make up reasons not to do something we're fully capable of doing and know we should do. And if you really are making excuses because something isn't a priority for you right now, that's absolutely fine! But if health and fitness aren't a priority for you, you're probably not reading an email or blog post from a gym either. What most people I talk to mean by excuses is that there are reasons why they haven't been able to make changes or barriers to getting where they want to be.
The second we reframe things as reasons instead of excuses, our whole approach to our goals can change. Instead of having to "be strong than your excuses", we can tackle those barriers to actually make the changes we want.
If the barriers are financial, you can meet with a coach to see if there's an option that better fits your budget and learn more about ways to eat healthy on a budget.
If your barriers have to do with time, remember that we don't actually all have the same twenty-four hours each day - what you have to do and when you have to do it can be very different from person to person. Look at your own schedule and see where you can carve out some time to meal prep or exercise. Remember that small actions add up over time!
If you've just had other things going on in your life, give yourself a break. There are times in life when there is just too much else going on to focus on your own health and fitness. When things settle a bit, that is your time to start focusing on small changes.
You don't have excuses, you have other things going on in your life besides health and fitness - and that's ok!
