Sleep, Are You Getting Enough?
Written By: Coach MJYou are doing a great job getting your fitness in, your diet is going well and your water intake is consistent...but you still feel out of sorts or not reaching your goals. Maybe there is one more area we need to focus on:
How is your sleep going? Are we getting enough sleep or are we getting a good quality sleep?
This is sometimes the part of our health journey that we look at last or don’t think has a major effect on how well our body functions. We all have times that our sleep patterns are off and that is normal but when it starts to become the norm instead of occasional, it may be time to dig a little deeper.
Sleep is important for many reasons including:
- A good sleep keeps our minds clearer so we function better, it recharges our body and minds to recharge for the day ahead. Chronic sleep loss gives you that “foggy brain” feeling and throws off our reactions.
- A good night's sleep helps with our emotional state of mind. Ever been around a tired toddler? No different for adults, we may not throw a tantrum in public but our reaction may not be as polite as we would like it to be.
- Lack of sleep can affect our immune system, as well as appetite hormones (causing us to either over or under eat) both which can reduce our bodies fighting ability against even the smallest viruses floating around.
Tracking your sleep is a great way to check if you are getting the sleep you need. Quite often we think we are getting more sleep than we really do.
Many people have a fitness tracker, and check it on a regular basis. Or a simple way is to journal your sleep habits, using the data you find helpful to you; how well you slept, length of sleep, disruptions or any marker that fits your tracking needs.
I challenge everyone to track your sleep and see if you do get the sleep you think you do. We may all be surprised at the results!
