Why Diets Don't Work
Written by: Mairead, Registered Dietitian
Many people find they're always bouncing from diet to diet. I hear from so many clients who come in saying that they've tried every diet out there and that nothing works, or that nothing works in the long-term. Does this sound like you?
When we're talking about diets, these are usually specific rules for ways to eat, with the goal of helping you lose weight or change your body composition. Many diets can be very strict and hard to stick to!
Often these diets "work" in the short-term, as long as we're able to keep eating in that way. When we can't keep it up any longer, we gain all that weight back - and more!
The biggest issue with diets for most people is that they aren't sustainable for the long term. They may be too strict, either in what you're allowed to eat or when you're allowed to, or both. If we can't stick to the rules, the diet stops working. For any nutrition changes to actually help us (in any form), we need to be able to keep them up.
If you're thinking of starting a new diet, consider the following questions:
- Am I going to have to competely cut out my favourite foods?
- Will these changes easily fit into my lifestyle?
- Do I have the cooking skills to eat this way consistently?
- Do I have the budget to eat this way consistently?
- Will I still be able to enjoy social events or special occasions?
- Is this diet hugely different from how I current eat?
If you've decided that strict diets are not for you but that you're interested in making nutrition changes, there are many other things you can do. Try focusing on one small change at a time. By making smaller changes, you're more likely to be able to keep them up longer. Setting flexible goals can also work better, instead of all-or-nothing diet rules. Focusing on accomplishing something most of the time can give you more wiggle room to accomodate real life in your goals.
