Why You Need Restorative Yoga This Winter
Written By: Coach MJ
Yoga is a journey unique to each individual. The word yoga is defined as ‘to yoke’ or unite. Your practice can be described as a union of your mind, body and soul (or spirit).
Restorative yoga is one style that offers the gift of stillness, calm and rest that helps you clear your mind as you hold a pose for longer times. We use our breath to calm the mind and props to support our bodies, as we learn to let go, even for a short time, of the worries and concerns we may carry throughout our daily lives. It is about taking time to refresh and rejuvenate so we can be there not only for ourselves but for all the others around us.
Props such as pillows, blankets, and rolled towels are used to hold you in comfort without any stress on the muscles and joints but allow them to truly relax in the pose. The fairy tale of the Princess and the Pea holds true, as any discomfort such as a wrinkle, lump or a pulling of a muscle can distract the mind from finding that calm state, so taking the time to adjust your props till you find that sweet spot is important to allow yourself to settle in and relax.
As we approach the next few months, the change from fall to winter, and the holiday season, taking time for self-care is important to handle the stresses we often put on ourselves. Restorative yoga helps us find that state of relaxation and let go, which in turn releases the tension and stress your body is holding in. As you are guided through the practice, the cues for breath work and gentle reminders allow your mind and body to relax and help to find that calm to let go and refresh.
