Eat Your Vegetables!!
Written By: Coach MJWe all know we should eat a well balanced diet for optimal performance in life, we hear at a young age from our parents to eat your vegetables because they are good for you. I am sure we all have some favorite saying we were told to get us to eat them!
What if veggies just are not your favorite thing to eat? Salads get boring or go bad in the fridge when we buy them with good intentions. We are in a hurry often and grab the ready to go meals or a quick sandwich and say we will eat some veggies later but rarely do. Or we are just tired of the same go-to vegetable that we grab out of the freezer or pantry.
Here are a few tips to improve your vegetable intake, find one that works well for you that you can stick with and build on over time; Like every good habit it takes time to make them stick.
If you enjoy a smoothie for breakfast or snack, add in a ½ cup of vegetables along with ½ cup of fruit, your liquid of choice and protein (yogurt, protein powder) Try spinach, cucumber, cauliflower if you're looking for not so overpowering flavours. Experiment with different flavor combinations and see what works!
- Add veggies into your egg dishes, omelets, quiches or alongside your eggs cooked your favorite way.
- Grilled or roasted vegetables have become a favorite in our house. I have found a love for several vegetables I never enjoyed before. Cut up veggies to bite size pieces, drizzle with olive oil (or your favorite oil) season as desired. Cook to the desired consistency. Be brave and try out the vegetables you have been avoiding and see if they taste better this way. Changing up the seasoning adds more variety to your menu planning. You can also save time by roasting in larger batches if you like to cook ahead.
Building healthier eating habits doesn’t have to be hard or perfect, we need to find ways that work for you and keep doing it.
