Why Exercise is Important As We Age!
Written By: Coach MJThere comes a point in time when our bodies do not respond to our usual fitness routine the same as it did when we were younger. We all come in different shapes and sizes and what is healthy for each one of us is unique to our body, genetics, lifestyles, and activities. What we do all have in common is the aging process!
In reality age is just a number. How you look after yourself in your nutrition and activity levels will have a determining effect on how your body operates, looks and feels.
According to Osteoporosis Canada, men and women build bone strength until their mid-thirties before they start to slowly lose bone density and strength. Women, as they approach menopause (around age 50), could lose bone density at the rate of 2-3 % per year due to reduced levels of estrogen. This can also lead to a higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures due to weaker bones. Another fact many women deal with during menopause and the changes in hormone production is weight gain, particularly extra weight on the belly area, mood swings and hot flashes!
The good news is that we don’t have to accept the changes and it is never too late to make a change!
We know the saying “use it or lose it!” We lose 1 % of muscle every year if we do nothing. Exercise can:
- Restore muscle loss and improve our muscle mass and strength.
- Help rebuild bone loss reducing our risks of fractures.
- Help offset the many changes menopause can have, avoided some of the weight gain, maintaining your mood and mental health, and give us more energy.
Going for walks is a great starting point. Adding in strength training, stretching and balance work is a great way to give yourself a well rounded routine to keep you moving well.
