Long Weekend Snack Ideas!
Written By: Mairead, Registered Dietitian
The first long weekend of the summer is here! Whether you're hanging out at home, working on some house or yard projects, or on the go with family, you'll need healthy snacks to keep you going!
Check out these ideas and try your favourites!
- Smoothies! Hot days call for cold drinks! Smoothies are a great way to pack in some extra nutrition from fruits and vegetables. Make sure to add a source of protein to keep you full, like Greek yogurt, silken tofu, or a protein powder.
- Trail mix! This snack is perfect for those who are exploring outdoors or traveling this weekend. Nuts provide healthy fats, while dried fruit boosts your fibre intake. Add a few chocolate chips or M&Ms for a sweet twist.
- Hummus with dippers! You can use store-bought hummus, or make your own - either will give you the protein and fibre from chickpeas. To dip, cut up your favourite vegetables or grab some whole grain crackers!
- Dressed up apple slices! This is a great way to satisfy a sweet craving! Cut your apple into flat slices, then top with your favourite nut butter. Add a sprinkle of toppings, like chocoalte chips, coconut, seeds, or dried fruit.
- Popcorn! Did you know popcorn is considered a whole grain and is higher in fibre than other salty snack foods? Try making your own using a plain microwave version, with an air popper, or on the stove. You can flavour it using your favourite seasonings and a little bit of butter or oil, or eat it plain!
