Spring Running Tips
Written By: Coach Loni
Has your winter delayed your running? Are you a 'treadmill for the winter" type of person? Spring is coming! Roads are improving - less ice, less snow!
Weather is still cool or cold and base layers are likely going to be your friend! It’s better to peel off and open zippers than to be underdressed and have a cold core! Having a hat or headband is still a good idea for our ears to keep that wind off them and help prevent unnecessary heat from escaping. Gloves are still great to have and when you get a bit warm, they’re easy to tuck into a pocket. Keep the core warm with a base layer under your running shirt and either a vest or a nice zip up jacket. Your legs also want to keep warm and I personally find that more of a compression style legging and tall socks help keep the calves warm.
After a couple kilometers into my run, I finally feel good and warm regardless of my warm up stretches.
When checking the temperature of the day for my run, I always add 7-10 degrees as a guideline to what I need to wear. So, say it’s -3 degrees, I add on 7-10 degrees onto that and dress accordingly. In this case, I will still have layers!
Running in this cooler weather still, if you have been on the treadmill in the winter, be aware that temperatures can change your running pace outcome. Going from a certain style running in the indoor temps, is much different than hitting the pavement outside in the elements!
Be kind to yourself as you start back up! It’s all good! Be a happy runner! Have fun and allow for any difficulty or challenges to happen, set some running goals and ease into it!
