The Importance of Fueling for Workouts
Written By: Mairead, Registered Dietitian
Have you ever had a workout feel really rough, and realized it was because you didn't have enough to eat beforehand? Underfueling for workouts is more common than you think, and can impact the progress of your fitness goals.
At best, underfueling might just leave us feeling a bit weak and draggy during a workout. At worst, this can lead to feeling dizzy or light-headed, or even passing out. Besides the impact on your workout, this increases the risk of injury for you, and for others in the gym.
When we're properly fueled, we're able to give our workouts full effort and our body will be ready to recover afterwards.
Underfueling for workouts can look different for everyone, and the solutions for it can be just as varied. If you haven't had time to eat all day and are heading for an evening class or training session, you likely won't be feeling your best. For morning workouts, many people aren't able to eat much prior to working out. If that's you, it becomes especially important to make sure you're having a full balanced meal the night before, or an evening snack to keep the tank topped up.
Regardless of the time of day, if it's been more than two or three hours since you last ate and you're about to workout, having a light and easily digested snack can help you keep your energy level up and make the most of your gym time. Food is literally energy, and we need that energy to perform our best, and reach our fitness goals.
