The Benefits of Chair Yoga
Written By: Coach MJ
Yoga has many benefits to keep your body moving well for all ages. It can be adjusted to work for most fitness levels and abilities. When we begin living with changes in our mobility due to things such as vertigo, arthritis or other mobility-limiting conditions that can come with age, there can be challenges in the way we move in our exercise or yoga routines. Chair yoga allows you to do many of the movements from a seated position as well as have a chair to use for a prop or support in your practice.
Staying as active and mobile as possible in all years of our lives can support us to stay in our homes for longer, do the activities we enjoy to do and feel better over all in our daily lives.
Here are a few benefits to participate in a regular chair yoga routine:
- Chair yoga improves flexibility and mobility by stretching in a way that works best for our abilities. We may find that we sit more and if we can find ways to improve our flexibility it may reduce some discomfort or soreness that we experience.
- Chair yoga may help improve our balance and coordination. By focusing on single areas for yoga moves such as single leg pose using the chair for support we become more aware of how our body is working or maybe not working as well. Learning to be aware of limitations we can focus on specific needs or poses that may help you move better.
- Pain management or reducing chronic pain can help you by strengthening the surrounding muscles through your yoga workouts. All exercises release the endorphin hormones that are known to improve not only your mood but reduce the level of pain we may be experiencing. Yoga also focuses on our breathing which can help us learn to cope with our different pain levels as well
- Yoga can also help with our overall mental health as well. When we work on improving our minds through yoga we can reduce our stress and refocus on the better parts of our lives. Yoga can help you sleep better which in turn helps have more energy and feel better as well.
