The Benefits of Restorative Yoga
Written By: Coach MJ
Restorative Yoga is a relaxing yoga practice that brings your mind and body into a deeply relaxed state that helps the body rest, heal and restore balance.
It is a passive style of yoga that uses props such as blankets, pillows or blocks to hold a pose in a comfortable position for a longer period of time. Focusing on longer holds in a supported manner, using our breath and being still allows our body to relax both physically and mentally to release tension we are holding or may not even realize is there.
In an ever stressful world, being able to relax and bring you back to a grounded state is what we all need more of these days! This yoga practice helps release tension in our muscles and compliments any stretching that we do as part of our fitness routines.
You will experience many great benefits:
- stress release by relaxing both mind and body,
- soothes the nervous system bring it from the flight/fight response back to our parasympathetic or relaxation nervous system,
- is gentle on the body for anyone who has chronic or acute pain or health conditions,
- helpful to release tight muscles that reduce mobility and flexibility, and
- promotes better sleep.
Clients have said that they were able to “relax deeper as they held a pose with support and truly relaxed for their body to be calm and their mind to slow down”. Another stated they have found “a muscle able to relax and relieve pain and sleep better because of it”.
